Thaipusam, Singapore - Arrival

Waiting

Waiting to enter the temple.

After a four kilometer barefoot walk in the noon day sun, the devotees wait patiently to enter the temple. The procession starts before dawn, but those doing the walk at noon probably have the toughest time of it. The temple has to stop the devotees coming through for about 10 minutes to do the mid-day prayers. During that time a little traffic jam of kavadi's develop. The waiting is difficult. Exhausted after the long walk and enduring the spikes, some are close to fainting and have to be supported by their friends.
Despite their exhaustion, the long line, and the wait to enter, reaching the temple and the end point of their arduous journey is a cause of celebration. The group of people supporting the kavadi carrier will throw a coconut on the ground to shatter it as an offering. Groups break into song, whistling, singing and drumming to support the carrier. The devotees often spin into dance in an emotional burst to get them through the last lap.

Whirl

Whirl

That last lap gets even tougher. Some devotees will don these nailed clogs to climb the final steps of the temple steps to deliver their offerings.

truly amazing shots, love the photo-journalistic bend. Those clogs are unbelievable, and horror of horrors, is that rust I see at the end of the nails?

the second shot is really cool. the inclusion of the guy's face in the bottom right hand corner really helps to create a tension with swirling energy in the rest of the photo. it's almost like a montage. congrats!

Cath, at this point, with the drumming and the shouts and songs of their friend and family, you can almost believe that nothing can stop them now, not even a few rusty nails :-)

kiampa, I had a tough time cropping that shot, so your comments on the composition are very valuable to me. thnks.

imho, foreground flowers are "disturbing", its bright colors takes too away much attention from your darker subject.

photo 2
great! now I'm seeing some serious action ;) good timing, you waited for him to face your way b4 snapping rite?

photo 3
feel that it would be much better to have it diagonally to see more of it.

keep them coming! thks!

slurp, yes it's a challenge getting the right balance for the faces and the bright kavadis.

On pic 2, because of the fast pace of the whirl, I had to take a number of shots, hoping to get one where he is facing me.

As for pic 3, this is a crop I have the whole clog in the pic. The problem I have is that when displayed at web sizes, showing the whole clog makes the picture so small that the impact of the nails i much less. If I were printing this out in in a large size, I might do a wider crop of this.

Your suggestion for a diagonal crop is a creative solution. I should consider this for future coompositions.

xin, I did not get too close so as not to get in their way. I used a telephoto lens to get the detail.
